Great article Fiona! I've been trying to learn as much as I can about Clubhouse in the last week, as I'm still not on it.
I'm curious, in what ways do you think it will be utilised over the next year or two? And do you think it has the potential to become one of the power players in social media?
Insightful questions Ben! I think it's bloated above average right now due to the novelty and exclusivity factor, and drive from big names on Twitter. My experience has been fairly positive especially with the rooms that had Mr. Beast (and his crew), MKBHD, and Elon Musk, because of the "unscripted" conversation and that anyone can have a direct conversation with them.
In next year or two, either it's Clubhouse or Twitter Spaces or whatever FB's version is going to be, I think audio-only platforms will stay and potentially replace radio or even a portion of podcasts/talk shows/talking YT videos. Besides the rooms with the big names, I only found significant value from one other room, because the pace on CH is slower and topics are much scattered. You might get 3 good points in 1 hour of discussion whereas you could get 10 from a podcast. It could also be used by people (big names or not) to express their opinions and get quick feedback quickly and more authentically.
I think it has potential to become a stable on people's phones due to the growing community, the comfort factor where people can passively listen or join a conversation from wherever, and FOMO, since everything on CH is happening live and the founders have no plans to add recording (from CH's town hall every week).
